Hojagiri from Tripura

In the Hojagiri Dance from Tripura, women dance while balancing a bottle on the head and an earthern lamp in the hand, moving only the lower half of their body.

A maximum of six women perform it on festive occasions and the full moon night of Durga Pooja. The dance is done in the praise of Goddess Mailuma or Laxmi.

The dancers need training to attain expertise in balancing and coordination.

Women usually wear a rignai (skirt), risa and rikutu (top). Men usually sing songs and wear the rikutu and kamcwlwi borok (lower garment).

Kham and Kshumu are the instruments used. This dance is performed chiefly by the Raeng or Riang tribe.
